It wasn't that long ago that every woman wore a girdle. My, how things have changed. We got rid of the girdles and made a declaration of independence from patriarchy - and now struggle to find a way to be powerful and compassionate, proactive and creative, without repeating the mistakes of the old paradigm. It's a shift of evolutionary proportions. But the paradox, according to Elizabeth Debold, is that "the group that has benefited the most from an evolutionary shift often wants to hang on to it. And this is my concern about women right now." Forty years ago we never would have imagined we'd find ourselves often less than effective in our circles, or drifting not-so-slightly into a feminist version of hierarchy. Dr. Debold has identified a new model for working together professionally and personally that will define how we move beyond our circles, beyond hierarchy, to take the next step in the evolution of our gender roles and of our species.
