When physician Judith Orloff is asked what’s the most important factor in health and recovering from illness, her answer is surrender. It’s her experience that surrender must be the engine that drives all choices about healing. However, it must be pointed out that surrender, by her definition, doesn’t mean giving in or giving up. “Surrender is the ability to flow with life and accept what is rather than pushing and fighting and struggling with life all the time. It’s about learning to sense with your intuition… also surrender is saying no to what isn’t working, toxic people, situations that aren’t right… letting go, I just want to say, it creates a certain bliss, happiness, and ecstasy because there’s no more struggle left… it’s the antithesis of holding on to resentments, clutching, being tight, being right; it’s the exact opposite of that.” She gives this advice regarding intention: “It’s a two step process. If you want something miraculous to happen, it’s setting your intention and then it’s letting it go…Most people think surrender won’t work because they equate it with defeat or giving up control and what they need to understand is that it’s both. It’s setting your intention and then letting go…the only way to learn that is to practice it in small things and see how successful they will be. The key is to surrender the outcome, your attachment to the outcome.” (hosted by Justine Willis Toms)
