In this inspiring episode from 1990, Joanna Macy, Ph.D., a renowned scholar of Buddhism, general systems theory, and deep ecology, discusses her extensive work on confronting despair and cultivating empowerment amidst planetary crises. Macy shares her personal journey with nuclear waste issues and highlights the importance of recognizing our interdependence through spiritual practices and collective action. She introduces the innovative concept of the “beings of the three times”—past, present, and future—which encourages us to foster solidarity with ancestors, current allies, and future generations. Macy elaborates on practices like the “Parsifal exercise” to awaken truth-telling and vitality, and explores the “greening of the self,” a shift towards understanding an ecological self rooted in interconnectedness and love. She emphasizes the significance of establishing “Guardian sites” for the mindful safekeeping of radioactive waste, drawing from ancient spiritual traditions to care for future generations. Macy’s insights inspire us to embrace spiritual awakening as a vital component of global healing and sustainability. (hosted by Michael Toms)
