Energy Security: the Growth of Soft Energy Systems

The recent energy crisis in California triggered the worst reflexes of many business and political leaders who clamored for more fossil-fuel power plants and fewer environmental limits. With the September 11th attacks has come the increased recognition that how we make and distribute energy is nearly impossible to protect. The Rocky Mountain Institute’s Hunter Lovins and renewable energy expert David Katz examine how these challenges present opportunities for dramatic shifts in energy production. 

Bios: 

Hunter Lovins, co-founder with Amory Lovins of Rocky Mountain Institute, is currently its strategy CEO. She has consulted for scores of industries and governments worldwide, and shared with Amory a Mitchell Prize, a Right Livelihood Award, the 1999 Lindbergh Award and a 2000 Time Magazine "Hero of the Planet" designation. A specialist in sustainable development, energy and resource policy, economic development, climate change, and land management, she has co-authored nine books including Natural Capitalism, has held visiting chairs at Dartmouth College and the University of Colorado and serves on the boards of two corporations and many public interest groups. 

David Katz has more than twenty years experience in supplying alternative energy products and systems. He is one of the country's most recognized experts on renewable energy systems. An entrepreneur, Mr. Katz founded Alternative Energy Engineering (AEE) in 1977, beginning as a small store in rural Northern California that specialized in alternative energy products, primarily photovoltaic modules. He is the author of A Homeowner's Guide to the Selection and Installation of a Solar Electric Power System, and also co-authored a book entitled, Choosing Solar Electric Modules.
