“If you want peace, prepare for peace,” is the motto of the University for Peace. Established by the United Nations in 1980, the new university is aptly located in Costa Rica, a nation which abolished the death penalty more than 100 years ago and which, since 1949, has had no army or military presence in one of the world’s most troubled spots, Central America. In this illuminating conversation, Carazo, former president of Costa Rica and founder of the University is joined by Murray Silberman, Director of Planning and Development, and Willis Harman, President of the Institute of Noetic Sciences and Member of the Board of Regents of the University of California. Peace, they affirm, is not an end to war; rather it is a spiritual development which results from education and commitment. This educational approach to world peace is the goal of the university: to teach teachers of peace throughout the world, to link other universities together in similar ventures, and to introduce a humane approach into our institutions and actions.
