We hate to be reminded of the dangerous degradation of our air, water and soil quality because it is so widespread and seems so hopeless. But Mollison, one of the originators of permaculture, tells us how to make land and water healthy and supportive of human and countless other forms of life. He describes a sensible, sustainable community that is feeding itself abundantly and saving energy costs while improving its soil and water quality, and tells how he himself rejuvenated five acres of badly abused land to create the "food forest" he lives in: "You could get lost in it, but you'd never starve!" Mollison illuminates the complex and marvelous interactions among trees and rain, soil, plants, animals and humans, as he tells us how to bring health and sanity back to land-use practices.
