Recipient of the Nobel Prize for Peace, the Dalai Lama has emerged as one of the great spiritual figures of this century. Here, in an exclusive interview with Michael Toms, he speaks of his positive impressions of Costa Rica, the purpose of religion, his memorable meeting with Thomas Merton, the individual's responsibility for change, and the relationship between Tibet and China. Further remarks were recorded during his visit to San Francisco in October 1989 as part of the Pilgrimage for Active Peace. In the second part of this program H.E. Tai Situpa, the conceiver and organizer of the Pilgrimage, suggests ways to encourage compassion or the "good heart" and emphasizes the relevance of "active peace." (hosted by Michael Toms)
